De eerste gastsprekers op het Koolen-de Vries weekend -intussen al 3 weken terug!- waren Ben Bolton en Nicki Arkell van het “Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust”.
The first guest speakers at the Koolen-de Vries weekend – now already 3 weeks ago! – were Ben Bolton and Nicki Arkell of the “Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust”.

Ze vertelden ons enthousiast over de “communicatie pyramide” en over het belang om erover te waken dat de verwachtingen evenredig zijn met de capaciteiten omdat enkel als deze goed zitten de communicatie goed en stressloos verlopen.
They told us enthusiastically about the “communication pyramid” and on the importance of keeping the expectations in proportion to the capacities as only if those conditions are fulfilled, the communication can be smooth and stress-free.

Als strategieën om communicatie te helpen, gaven ze volgende tips:
As strategies to help communication, they gave these tips and tricks:

• SMOG: Spreken Met Ondersteuning van Gebaren
  => Dit is wat we nu ook al leren via de thuisbegleiding van “de Kangoeroe”.
  
  MAKATON: Speaking with Support Of Signs
  => What we already do with our speech therapist.
• Uitwerken van een foto-uitwissel-systeem
  Vb. Foto van tv laten afgeven om duidelijk te maken tv te willen kijken.
  Working out a photo-exchange system
  Ex. Giving the picture of the TV for showing they would like to watch TV.
• Keuzeborden maken
  Vb. foto’s van fruitsap en water om te helpen kiezen.
  => Momenteel niet meteen voor ons wegens Guillaume te oud en Thibault te jong.

Making “choice signs”
Ex. a selection board with a picture of juice and water to help making choices.
=> Not immediately for us because Guillaume is too old and Thibault to young.

• “Communicatieboek” maken
  Vb. Selectie van foto’s van hun interesses (familie, reizen, speelgoed, feestjes…) om te helpen een verhaal te vertellen.
  => De aanvulling van één van de ouders om iets dergelijk te maken met foto’s aan een sleutelhanger vond ik ook een geweldig idee!
  
  Creating a “communication book”
  Ex. a selection of pictures of their interests (family, travel, toys,…) to help them to tell a story.
  => I loved the idea of one of the parents to make something similar with pictures on a keychain!
• Visueel tijdoverzicht ophangen
  Vb. dagprogramma met prentjes uitleggen om nadien op terug te kijken.
  => Hier wil ik binnenkort mee aan de slag. Misschien een perfecte DIY om op koude winterdagen te knutselen?
  
  

  

  Displaying a visual time overview
  Ex. explaining the overview of the day and ensuring that it can always be consulted.
  => I ‘d love to start with this very soon. Maybe a perfect DIY for cold winter days

We namen een aantal nuttige tips EN een concreet plan mee uit deze uiteenzetting en hopen hier op -relatief korte?- termijn al vruchten van te kunnen plukken, want voor Thibault is het sowieso goed, maar ook Guillaume heeft op zijn 3 jaar (en 4 maanden) nog altijd een eerder beperkte talenkennis. Er is dus werk aan de winkel en ik vermoed tussen kerst en nieuw hierop terug te komen met de details over mijn “communicatieproject“. Wordt vervolgd…

We learned a number of useful tips AND made a concrete plan and hope on a -relatively short?- term to book results, because for Thibault it will be good anyway and also Guillaume still has at the age of 3 years (and 4 months) rather limited language skills. So there is work to do and I think/hope to come back between Christmas and Newyear with the details of my “communication project“. To be continued…
